Care & Install

Raw hair is an investment, and with the right care a unit will last through many installs. Here's how to keep yours looking the way it did the day it arrived.

Washing

Wash every two to three weeks, or sooner with heavy product use. Use lukewarm water and a sulfate-free shampoo, working it through in downward strokes — never pile the hair on top of your head or scrub in circles, which is what causes matting at the root.

Conditioning

Follow with a moisturizing conditioner from mid-length to ends. Keep it off the knots at the base of the cap, where it can loosen the hair over time. Rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the cuticle.

Drying

Air dry whenever you can. Place the unit on a mannequin head or wig stand and let it dry fully before styling or storing — putting a damp unit away is the fastest way to cause mildew and odor.

Heat styling

Always apply a heat protectant first. Keep tools on a medium setting; under 350°F is a safe rule for regular styling. Raw hair takes heat well, but repeated high temperatures will shorten its life.

Detangling

Use a wide-tooth comb and work from the ends upward, never from the roots down. Take your time through tangles rather than pulling — patience here is the difference between a unit that lasts a year and one that doesn't.

Storage

Store on a mannequin head or in a satin bag. Avoid leaving it loose in a drawer or bag, where friction causes tangling and the cap loses its shape.

Installing

Customizing

Pluck the hairline and tint the lace to match your skin tone if you want a more natural finish. Cut lace slowly and conservatively — you can always take more off.

Application

Use a quality lace adhesive, or install glueless using the adjustable straps and combs. Make sure your natural hair is clean, dry, and flat underneath.

Removal

Always use a proper adhesive remover and give it time to break down the bond. Never pull the lace off dry — that's how hairlines tear and edges get damaged, on both the unit and you.

Overnight

Wrap the edges with a silk or satin scarf before bed, or sleep in a satin bonnet. Cotton pillowcases pull moisture from the hair and rough up the cuticle.

A few things to avoid

• Sleeping with the unit wet
• Brushing aggressively while damp
• Applying conditioner directly to the knots
• Storing it folded or crumpled
• High heat without a protectant
